In December of 2000, sisters Kim Maxson and Lynn Hardell launched a freight business operating from a small office nestled in the historic Slater Mill in Jewett City, CT. Curious foot traffic would often wander into the office, asking about their services. This sparked an idea—why not offer in-person services in addition to their brokerage? After researching and exploring new opportunities, Two Sisters was officially born on July 8th, 2003!
Over time, Lynn pursued a new venture, leaving Kim to grow Two Sisters into a cornerstone for the community—a place where both local businesses and residents could always turn to for help with shipping and other business needs. Kim’s son, Jeff, was involved from a young age, helping out in the store from as early as fifth grade. By the time he graduated high school, Kim had expanded Two Sisters to Groton, where Jeff took on a larger role, managing much of the day-to-day operations. In 2020, Lynn's son, Luke Hardell, joined the team, carrying on the Two Sisters legacy as a family business.
Kim is the owner of Two Sisters and has been building the business for over 23 years.
Outside of work, she enjoys traveling to fun destinations and spending time with her family - especially her new grandson! One of her favorite parts of running the business is working alongside the next generation of the Two Sisters family, Jeff and Luke. She’s proud to see how the business has evolved over the years and is excited for what the future holds.
Fun fact: Kim has had a wide range of past jobs - including working at a trash-to-energy plant, a radio station, and even helping tag Canadian Geese at the Department of Environmental Protection!
Jeff manages operations across the entire company and has been working full-time at Two Sisters since graduating high school in June 2019. He actually started helping out as early as sixth grade and has grown up with the business - literally, having spent much of his childhood being babysat in the back room of the original Two Sisters location at Slater Mill Mall in Jewett City. (Rumor has it, his constant screaming as a kid might’ve played a small role in the store needing more space!)
Jeff enjoys problem-solving most, whether it’s tackling a complicated print job or coordinating a challenging shipment.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with Lauren and Ryder (pictured), as well as playing video games.
Corrine has been part of the Two Sisters team since October 2018.
She enjoys spending time outdoors doing yard work and attending baseball games.
Corrine says her favorite part about working at Two Sisters is the family atmosphere and the supportive environment.
Raymond has been part of the Two Sisters team since March 2022. Known for his great sense of humor, he helps keep the atmosphere light and fun for both the team and our customers.
When he’s not at work, Raymond enjoys playing sports and fixing just about anything—he’s always up for a hands-on challenge.
Hannah joined the Two Sisters team in October 2024 and quickly became a bright spot in the store. She brings positive energy to every shift and helps keep the day running smoothly with her upbeat attitude and helpful spirit.
Outside of work, Hannah loves cooking and spending time with her family. She’s happily married to her best friend—cue the aww!
Maira has been part of the Two Sisters team since 2013. She says her favorite part of the job is the daily interactions with the wonderful customers and coworkers who make each day special.
Outside of work, Maira creates beautiful mosaic birdhouses using reclaimed glass and loves the thrill of antique hunting. One of her most memorable adventures was a cross-country camping trip to Alaska, where she rock hounded along the way and collected unique treasures throughout the journey.
Luke is a valued member of the Two Sisters team—and as the son of one of the “sisters,” he’s been part of our story from the beginning. His primary role is working in our stores, where he’s known for his reliability and friendly presence. When he’s not in the shop, Luke is busy behind the scenes—coordinating oversized shipments, handling local pickups and deliveries in the Two Sisters van, and managing our warehouse operations.
In his downtime, he enjoys traveling, barbecuing and smoking meats, and relaxing on the back deck with a cold drink.
